This is my guide to help fix problems you are having with AE, and or your computer. I will keep this as updated as I can, adding new problems and solutions as they come.

If you have any of the problems listed below and fix it with any of the solutions listed, post what problem you had and what solution(s) you used to fix it. This will help sort out what works and what does not. (Example: problem 4 solution 4-(IMG:style_emoticons/default/cool.gif)

Problems

1. Map is all messed up with random squares.
2. Screen resets after logging off. (chat boxes are not where you left them)
3. Game crashes/closes after selecting the server.
4. Unable to connect to login server.
5. Game gets booted while playing.
6. Game downloads files every login.
7. Install files don't work. (.msi, .zip)
8. How to turn off the intro video.
9. 459 Files load every time AE is opened.
10. Hotkeys are all messed up.

Possible Solutions

1. Map is all messed up with random squares.
--A. Continue to uncover your map
--B. Delete the map file. It is called "map_0.dat" and is located in your Ashen Empires root folder under \Data\User_Data\Server_Character (Deleting the file causes the map to go black, leaving you to uncover it all over again) (See Tips - Character Files below for more info)

2. Screen resets after logging off. (chat boxes are not where you left them)
--A. Check to see if the Screen Setup file is set to read only
--B. Try creating a folder and moving the Screen Setup file to that folder allowing the game to create a new one. (See Tips - Character Files below for more info)

3. Game crashes/closes after selecting the server.
--A. Make sure you have all the latest drivers for your sound, and video. Also have the latest DirectX installed, which you can get here. Direct X
--B. (New Untested Idea) Try deleting the server folder, corresponding to which server you select. Folders are located at \Ashen Empires\Data\Legends, Heroes, or Test Server (causes game to redownload the server files)
--C. If using a rounter or port blocker make sure that TCP 26100 and 26115 are not being blocked.
--D. Try a clean install. (See Clean Installation in the Tips below for more info)

4. Unable to connect to login server.
--A. Check server status
--B. Check your firewall, or any software that blocks internet connectivity.
--C. If using a rounter or port blocker make sure that TCP 26100 and 26115 are not being blocked.
--D. Try a clean install. (See Clean Installation in the Tips below for more info)

5. Game gets booted while playing.
--A. 56k Dial up might be more susceptible than higher speed connections.
--B. Check server status
--C. Check that you aren't running any bandwidth using programs during game play.
--D. Check other computers on your network for high bandwidth usage.
--E. Check your internet connection itself.

6. Game downloads files every login.
--A. Try deleting the vdata.dat file located in the Ashenempires folder.
--B. Try a clean install. (See Clean Installation in the Tips below for more info)

7. Install files don't work. (.msi, .zip)
--A. Try getting the Ashen Empires.exe (224k) and LoginData.dat (6MB) files. Then run the AE.exe file (might give an unable to connect message, if so try it again). Once you're at the login screen, login, and the rest of the files should start downloading. You can stop and resume this when ever you want as well, but it takes longer to download this way.

-Must download both links to get both files.
--For downloading AE Live Client get it here.
AE File 1
AE File 2

--For downloading DS Test Client get it here.
DS File 1
DS File 2

After you have downloaded the files, you need to use WinRar to extract the files that are within.
--Get WinRar here:WinRar

8. How to turn off the intro video.
--A. First Start by creating a shortcut on your desktop if there isn't one there already. Second right click on the shortcut and select properties. Third add /nointro to the end of the target line as the picture shows here. Last click ok, and all should be in working order.

9. 459 Files load every time AE is opened.
--A. Perform a clean install as described in the Tips below.

10. Hotkeys are all messed up.
--A. When you have that problem, it means that particular hotkey file is corrupted. When you delete that file and return to the game and redo those hotkeys, it creates a brand new file when you exit the game. Here's how to find the file:

1. Open the folder where AE is installed (usually C:\Program Files\Iron Will Games\Ashen Empires)
2. Open the Data folder.
3. Open the User_Data folder.
4. The next folder to open is a combination of your server (either Legends or Heroes), an underscore (_) and your character name (in my case, "Ghost of Choice"). For example: "Legends_Ghost of Choice"
5. There will be a bunch of files starting with "HotSlot_" and the number of the hotkey bar in question. If your hotkey bar #4 is damaged, the file name would be "HotSlot_4.dat". This is the file you should either delete or move to another folder if you don't feel comfortable deleting it.
6. Get back in to AE, and that hotkey bar will be fresh and untouched. Redo your keys, and exit the game, and a good file of your hotkeys will be created.

Tips

-AE Install File

Keep the downloaded install file of AE incase you need to reinstall. Burn it to a CD if you have to, it can save you hours of downloading if you have a slow internet connection.

-Character files

1. Map file -------------- Size: 257KB ------- Location: User_Data folder
2. Screen Setup file ----- Size: 4KB or less -- Location: User_Data folder
3. Questionable Char File - Size: 12k --------- Location: User_Data folder

To find the right characters map, or screen setup file you need to log into your bugged character. (this will update that chars map and other files) Open the \Ashen Empires\Data\User_Data Folder, once there right click on the background of the folder, and change the "View" to Details. You can now sort the files by Modified (Which sorts them by date and time. Since the files were just updated it should be near the top or bottom of the list of files). The file names look something like ad2e45f3ae3df38bae351b29767c332c.dat All have similar names you must use the size of the file to determine which one is which. (File size listed above)

-Other Files

1. VData.Dat -- Location: \Ashenempires folder

-Clean Installation

Uninstall AE, backup the User_Data folder (Located in AshenEmpires/Data/User_Data) then delete the AE folder. Reinstall AE and put the User_Data folder back in the Data folder.

-Virus - Spyware/Adware Scanners

Three very powerful programs that I use in my arsenal against spyware and viruses.

Trend Micro Housecall 4.5 of 5 Stars
Features an online Virus, and Spyware/Security Scanner free of charge.

Spybot Search & Destroy 4.5 of 5 Stars
An anti spyware tool, full of handy computer feateurs, immunization, and removal tools.

Ad-Aware SE 4.5 of 5 Stars
A useful program for removing spyware, and small viruses.

One scanner will never find threat there is, because each scanning program created and updated by different people. Thoes different people arent able to keep track, and find every threat there is so it is smart to use more than one scanner for your computers saftey.

Very nice detailed document! I'm sure this will help several people!

Also have some must-have to add to your virus / spyware arsenal:

1> AVG Free Edition -for viruses
2> Malware Bytes' Anti-Malware -for spyware / adware
3> Hijack This -for browser hijackers
