So I'm building into a conmage, and am currently running into a bit of a snag. I don't seem to do much of any damage to anything at level 18 with soul. I'd really like advice on how to properly level right now. My souls level is 20+5. I am using a 3 slot rod. I also have 300k exp pool that I'm saving just in case I need it for anything.

As of right now I'm not VIP and I have no expansions. I am waiting a bit to find out if the old PvP will be changed. I really am against them removing item drops when you die and such... it's probably half the fun and thrill of playing.

Also any side tips are helpful. Such as tips on whether or not to become lotor or the other guys. I know the orbs helped so much before, then a system got changed, then changed back, then something else happened. I really can't follow everything up to this point lol. I mainly used factions to help me get through low levels, the orbs helped so much.

Int, the key to mage damage is having lots of int. Ask for better int buffs or do quests to gain better int gear.
pruck
I've gone purely int so far. Including the town buff, and my plus 7 to int gear I think it was.
Hephaistion
i personally never cared for soul. better off leveling body and mind first
pruck
I'm starting to think the same... soul is seeming underwhelming.
Any suggestion on what is best used in PVE for a lower level fellow, body or mind? I'm doing mind now, and it seems alright, but I guess healing would be nice... depending on how much damage I give up for it.

Also, I'm fizzling like CRAZY. Is this normal? I almost die to things my level sometimes because I fizzle 5-7 times in a row occasionally.

At lower levels you will fizzle more often, simply due to the low base INT, and Soul, Mind, Nature, Body levels. Higher INT=Less fizzles. I personally would level mind until it is a decent level, and then do the same with body. As you progress in levels and do quests, you'll gain tons of epool which can easily be placed into the other magery skills that you need to level. Like Norco, and others said, at lower levels gear for the highest INT you can, as resistances for low level mobs aren't too important, if you can dps and then heal up. Also if you don't have a piece of gear that gives +INT, try wearing a item that gives +All Stats. I've been all the variety of mages before, and am a AE veteran of 14 years. So if you have any other questions feel free to ask. King Norco has a book of Battlemages on his profile, which contains a lot of useful information for mage builds. Worth checking out!

I'm not looking to make a battlemage. I'm not really "well off" when it comes to cash, either. So I was thinking body might be a good solution to pots to raise first (healing)? I have actually been playing AE since it was Dransik way back in the day, and I'm now returning. I've come and gone many, many times. Making little progress every time haha. Updates and lag got to me, then once all that was sorted out, population got to me. Now I'm seeing more activity on the PVP server, and I'm hoping this game becomes pretty well known. Team hunts and fighting and such is just so much fun.

Easy way?

Do monk escorts and just epool body and mind,. You will get to level(core) 45 with body/mind around 50 in no time. Just ask for deer/gazelle buff in lsp bank and start running. Not hard at all.

What server are you in? I can hook you up with some low level gear.

Also Soul might seem underwhelming at lower levels, but it's the overall best pvp mage rune

On early levels Body is the best type hands down, not for PvP but for leveling up. You get healing spells, you get a decent AoE and you get a defensive buff which helps for when you use the AoE. Also you get a Str buff which means you can carry more runes and pots. Then again you can just ask someone else for buffs. Another advantage is that you do not have to switch runes.

Thats at least my opinion, I am sure someone have some argument for why you should choose another type. Hope this helps ^_^

I agree with Norco.

I always started with Body because you can keep yourself and others alive with it and it has some reasonable attack spells. Nature would be second, for me, cause it also has healing and some nice attacks. Then, when you have the healing under control, mind (which has powerful attack spells but no healing). And, finally, soul. IMO soul is the trickiest of the lot and great for buffs, in parties and a cool thing once you are strong enough to take a little beating if you're solo.

I'm speaking as a pve only mage, however. Can't say what pvpers think.

Welcome to the lands of Dransik, friend.
I'd stick with leveling body at first simply because of the healing spells. You will find keeping yourself alive is much more affective than dishing out tons of DPS. especially at a low level.

I would not worry a whole lot about the low level buffs, ask someone capable of giving max buffs in bank.
Also, PVE may not be in your best interest just yet. Monk quests are an excellent exp source for low levels. If you are not familiar with them, I'd be happy to show you.
Fellnelm
+1 for leveling using Body magic. I recommend Mage Storm with Superior Heal until you cant level using body any longer at all. Keep it up on stronger and stronger mobs as you level. Find mobs that are "social"
status, which means that when you agro one of them, all the other mobs of the same name in the area will also become aggressive. But do this wisely, in areas where you can use the terrain to your advantage by limiting the
number of mobs that can actually hit you while you AoE the lot of em. Having no expansions or v.i.p. will definitely slow your leveling and lessen your gear options but using AoE is a great way to put on bulk xp fast without these.
Also there are numerous quests that give decent chunks of epool throughout the mainlands. Always do Lotorian Knight quests. A couple of key gear pieces you could get are Naturalist Greaves(npc Alchemist Singaford) and Bloody Rag of Rumpda(npc Rumpda), both quests start in Krog. Dunaga in Mareket and Sozal in the cave north of Silvest also both give good starter pieces and epool.

Good luck to you in your new beginning!!

All Hail the Runic Enclave!

Thank you so much everyone! I'm playing on H, my character name is Goby Fish, and Goby is my tank character for when I get tired of running around everything and I feel like just mindlessly beating on things.

I don't expect items, but for anyone looking to level lowbie characters in a group, let me know. I'll gladly join. Solo is pretty dull.
